During his 67 years, he worked as a jailer in Barrow County, a county coroner, the owner of a Winder radio station, a sheriff's deputy and as an industrial engineer for NASA.
Griffin never stopped trying new things and never failed to find new friends no matter where his meandering career path took him.
"He was a really well-liked individual; he was well-liked here," said Sheriff Jud Smith. "He left some big shoes to fill."
Griffin died Saturday following a long battle with cancer. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Winder First Presbyterian Church, with the burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Griffin, originally from Gadsden, Ala., moved to Winder in the early 1980s and quickly became part of the community. He purchased WIMO-AM (1300), where he worked for 15 years as a sound engineer, general manager and news reporter.
"I used to take him out on some of the searches for marijuana and stuff like that, and we got to be close friends," said former Barrow County Sheriff Joel Robinson. "One time, he carried me to the disc jockey convention in Nashville."
